New Vape Product Standards Now in Effect: What You Need to Know

New Vape Product Standards Now in Effect: What You Need to Know

As of 1 July 2025, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has officially implemented stricter safety and quality standards for therapeutic nicotine vaping products in Australia. These updates apply to all vapes supplied through pharmacies for smoking cessation and nicotine dependence management.

This marks the latest phase of Australia’s ongoing vaping reform, aimed at reducing potential harm and improving oversight of therapeutic vaping goods.

What’s Changed?

Pharmacies can now only supply TGA-compliant therapeutic vape products. Non-compliant products have been removed from the TGA notified vape list, meaning they can no longer be legally sold or prescribed. As a result, many familiar brands may no longer be available, and some sponsors have withdrawn products from the market entirely.

Key Standards Introduced on 1 July 2025

Ingredients:

  • Only the following are permitted:

    • Nicotine (max 50mg/mL)

    • Propylene glycol

    • Glycerol

    • Water

    • Flavours: Mint, menthol, or tobacco only

Packaging & Labelling:

  • Plain packaging and minimal design for devices and accessories

  • Mandatory information leaflets included with each product

  • New usage instructions and safety labelling requirements

Device Standards:

  • Enhanced requirements covering:

    • Battery and electrical safety

    • Toxicological risk assessments

    • Risk management

    • Medical device manufacturing quality

What It Means for Consumers

If you’ve noticed changes to your vaping routine this month, you’re not alone. Due to these new regulations:

  • Some products have been discontinued or replaced

  • Pharmacies may have limited stock while new compliant brands become available

  • If your usual vape is no longer stocked, speak with your pharmacist or prescriber about alternatives

  • Prescriptions issued before 1 July 2025 for now non-compliant products can no longer be filled

It’s also worth noting that the TGA has not evaluated any vaping product for inclusion in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). Therapeutic vapes remain unapproved medicines, supplied only under strict conditions.

A Reminder on Quit Support Options

Vapes are not the first-line treatment for quitting smoking. The TGA continues to recommend:

  • Behavioural support

  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) — including patches, gum, and lozenges
(some of which are subsidised under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme)

For Pharmacists and Prescribers

Now that the new product standards are active:

  • Pharmacies must ensure all stocked vape products meet the TGA’s updated requirements

  • Non-compliant products must be removed from sale, returned to suppliers, or properly disposed of

  • Prescribers need to issue updated prescriptions for compliant products listed on the TGA notified vape list

Education and awareness among pharmacy staff and patients remain essential in the wake of these changes.
