Nicorette QuickMist Now Approved for Vaping Dependence

Australia has just reached an important milestone in tackling nicotine addiction. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has expanded approval of Nicorette QuickMist – a fast-acting nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) – so it can now also be used to treat dependence caused by vaping, not just smoking.

Why This Matters

Vaping has become increasingly common, with around 1.7 million Australians vaping regularly. At the same time, most people don’t want to stay hooked – a recent Quit and Cancer Council survey (May 2024) found three in four vapers were planning to quit or cut back within the next three months.

Up until now, Australians wanting to quit vaping had very few approved treatment options. The TGA’s decision changes that, giving people access to a tested, regulated therapy designed to make quitting more manageable.

What QuickMist Does

Nicorette QuickMist works by delivering a small, fast dose of nicotine to the mouth, helping to ease cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It has already been used widely by people quitting smoking – but now, with its approval for vaping dependence, it becomes a new option for vapers too.

Clinical trials showed promising results:

  • 8 out of 10 people experienced at least a 50% reduction in cravings after a single spray

  • Fast-acting relief helped participants better manage withdrawal in the early stages of quitting

A Step Forward in Quit Support

Quitting nicotine – whether from smoking or vaping – is challenging. This expanded approval means:

  • More choice for people wanting to quit

  • An evidence-based option specifically recognised for vaping dependence

  • Extra support alongside behavioural strategies and community programs

As health experts have highlighted, it’s often hard to stop without the right tools. Having a treatment officially approved for vaping dependence means Australians now have another reliable option to lean on.
